Trades at Gourin

  • During the major events in Tronjoly, the volunteers animate the workshop with demonstrations that revive the exhibits

Since the 19th century, the Gourin region has been an important center for the extraction of granite, sandstone and, above all, slate slate. With the arrival of the train in 1896, the quarries took a remarkable growth. Their exploitation has been maintained to this day except for the slate quarries which were abandoned in 1962, for technical as well as competitive reasons (Spain). In agreement with the municipality of Gourin, the association "Traditions and Patrimony in Black Mountains" (TPMN) manages an annex of the castle of Tronjoly in which are displayed on panels the memory of this industrial past in the form of Photos of mining sites, workers, career owners, administrative archives, work tools, etc. In addition, the city has a large collection of tools from the collection of Dr. Groazel, former doctor of Gourin . They were grouped in a workshop of the old tools and presented by profession (carpenter, sabotage maker, farrier ...).
